Access Memory

I just upgraded to Windows XP. I installed an old version of Microsoft
Office for Windows 95. All of the programs work fine except for Microsoft
Access. When I attempt to start it, I get a message saying Out Of Memory.
I have 457 mb of physical memory available and 1.83 gb of virtual memory.
Any idea what is causing this. I could buy a newer version but would like
to fix this version if possible.

I suggest that you upgrade it to any other version. Access 95 was the first
32 bit version of Access, and suffered from quite a few bugs, not the least
of which was its propensity to crash and corrupt applications while you were
designing them. Besides, that version hasn't been supported by Microsoft in
quite a few years. To be fair, once the design work was done, it was fairly
stable.

Unfortunately, the programs are not upgradeable so I will have to buy a full
version for around $500. Another better idea from Microsoft! Either that,
or throw away 8 years worth of work on several databases.

Try reducing your virtual memory, to bring it below 1 GB.

To add to Tom's suggestion, it appears that MS also has a download to
correct the issue.

There is no reason to throw away any of your work. Access 95 can be upgraded
to a later version. At some point this will no longer be the case and you
may be really stuck and unable to upgrade. A quick check on eBay shows full
copies of Office available for less than half and some of the old software
companies were selling full copies of Office for under US$200. There are
some fixes that may work, but every professional developer who has had any
experience with Access 95 has been happy to upgrade.

Go ahead and try reducing your virtual memory so that your total available
memory is less than a GB. Access 95 may work but other programs may now give
you a problem. It's like trying to run an old car on leaded gasoline. You
have to continuously make adjustments and buy additives, but eventually
you'll either buy a later model or be walking.

Thanks Joseph--I hadn't bothered reading the article past Method 1....simply because it is
Access 95!

Method 2 is certainly a better fix, but like Arvin pointed out, it's time for our Nevadan
friend to upgrade. He can't stay in the Wild Old West forever....unless he wants to be
the Lone Ranger.
