I am trying to install a driver for a USB networking device on XP Professional machine. Just as it is about to finish I get an error message that says:

There was a problem installing this hardware.

An error occured during installation of this device.

Acess is denied

Anyone know what this means and what I can do to fix this?
The device I am trying to install is Linksys wireless USB adapter.
I have Administrator privileges. I even created another accout with admin privileges and tried to install with it. Same result.
I called Linksys tech support. They didnt know what the problem was and told me it wasnt a problem with their product.

Just let me know one thing that you are getting this error while installing other devices also or not.

I tried other USB devices (a camera and a mouse) and they didnt have this problem. The camera, though, installed automatically when I plugged it in.

I dont know what could be causing this problem. Perhaps a read only file needs to be overwritten or something. If so, I have no clue what this file is or where to look for it. Any ideas?

I have the same problem while installing my USB to Serial adapter. I also am an administrator and have tried many many different things but I can't get this driver installed. The file is in Windows/System32/Drivers and is called ser2pl.sys What's the reason?

A Possible Solution

I recently had the same problem (in Windows XP Home SP2) attempting to reinstall USB drivers that were not working. After trying many suggestions the following allowed the devices to install without any Access is Denied errors:

Log into an account with Administrator privileges.
Click on Start, then Run. In the box type in Regedit and click OK.
In Regedit, right click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and choose Permissions.
In Permissions, give yourself Full Control. After that click the Advanced button. Check "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" and then click Apply. Click OK for any permissions that won't change. When this finishes, exit Regedit and try reinstalling the device drivers again.
