access error "could not lock file"

I have a couple of databases that are linked to one another, and are all kept
in the same folder, i have a group set up with modify access and then domain
users with read and execute, if no-one from the modify group is in the domain
users can open the file and it's read only, however if someone with modify
has the file open then the domain users get "could not lock file" error.

i have tried a couple of other setting like giving them create etc but
nothing seems to work. the only way i can get them toopen it is to give them
write access but then the file isn't read only.

the database is set to shared with no locking, so any suggestions you have
would be greatfull

I"m assuming that your are referring to OS permissions; if that's the case,
all users must have read/write/create/delete permissions on the folder where
your database is stored. Once you've set these OS permissions, you can
implement User Level Security to control which users can access your data.
