We are presently experiencing a serious issue with Access
97. For some reason, our main database file will not
open. Access is telling us that the database is an
unrecognized format or does not exist. We are assuming
that the file has become corrupt for some reason and we
have tried repairing, compacting and copying the dtabase
with no luck. We have checked for viruses and were
clean. We have tried using the Jetcomp.exe utility, as
listed in the knowledge base. Unfortunately we do not
have a recent back-up to fall back on.

Are there any other suggestions out there??

Are you running both Access 97 and Access 2000 or 2002 or XP or any of the other Versions MS has decided to spit out every 6 months. If you are running both Access 97 and any other mentioned versions on THE SAME MACHINE then that is probably your problem. Windows (any version) will remember the last version of MSACCESS you opened and will continue to open all databases in that version. I.E. if you have a 97 database but you recently ran msaccess 2k to open a newer version file, then windows will by default use access 2k to run any database and will prompt to convert database. Vice-versa if you try to use access 97 to run a 2000 database. In order to set Windows straight you will need to open msaccess 97 directly. Locate MSACCESS.EXE on the machine in question and double-click it. 97 has a YELLOW KEY as the icon. 2000 will have a purple key. Hope this helps.

Try creating a new database and see if you can import
objects. You might want to try just the tables first. Good
Luck.

We created a new database and imported the tables and we
were told that the database does not exist, even though it
is present.

Thanks for the suggestion but we are only running Access
97. The operating systems on the client machines vary
however. We have some on Windows NT workstation, some on
Windows 98 and some on windows 2000 Pro. I don't think
this would have any affect on this particular problem, but
right now I'll try any suggestion.
