Access Denied

I am running a W2K(SP4) workstation on a LAN network. I
have administrator privileges on my logon account. There
are several things that Windows is not allowing me to do:

1. When I try to do a Windows Update from IE (running
IE6.0), I get an "Access Denied" error and it will
not let me update the PC.
2. When I go to use Add/Remove Programs, all the Change
and Remove buttons are grayed out and I cannot make
any changes to what I have installed.

Any suggestions about what is going on with my
administrator rights would be appreciated. Thanks.

First make absolutely sure you are logged on as an administrator. The behavior you
indicate suggests you are not. You can use "net user username" to verify the
membership of local groups while logged onto a computer. Possibly you were removed
from administrator access and you may want to ask your administrator about such. ---

Pam,

When did this start? Also have you updated your virus scanner lately?

Yes, I have administrator rights (actually I am the
administrator here at a small facility; the only one in
Systems Dept.). I can use my username otherwise, on
servers and such. It is just this one PC that a user is
having problems with. I have also tried the regular
Administrator account on that local PC and get the same
thing.

This started about a week ago when he uninstalled a piece
of software using the program's uninstall program. I have
updated the virus scanner and run a scan....no viruses. I
have updated IE. I cannot do an in-place upgrade due to
the fact that the W2K CD I have is for SP2 and this PC is
at SP4....it will not let you regress. Any suggestions??
Thanks!

It may be that the Windows installation has been messed up and things aren't
acting correctly anymore. You could try installing over it (repair) to see
if that helps make things right. Otherwise, reinstall Windows and the
service pack. Sometimes that takes less time than beating your head against
a quirky problem.

Pam,

I am having a similar problem with TCP/IP settings. I came
accross a message posted earlier that refers to parasites
(not viruses) that have been known to do this.
Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution yet.

IE Properties Restricted.

If you find a solution, post it here for the rest of us,
as I will too.

I doubt your issue is anything like the poster's. But if you were to
post the exact details, perhaps we could find you a solution as well.
