access denied when trying to join Workgroup..

I set-up Shortcuts for WINxp users to join Workgroup to get at Access 2000
mdb. They all work fine. I then gave them instructions on how to manually
Join workgroup (if not on their machine, or remote, etc), using WRKGADM.

When run WRKGADM, and attempt to join either this Workgroup, or even their
own System.mdw workgroup, get message saying "Access Denied".

Is it a folder permisioon issue? If so, why would they also get when
rejoining system.mdw?

How do you know they're using wrkgadm properly?

Perhaps they're choosing the wrong file?

I went to their site and tried myself - in Wrkgadm, I browsed to same
Workgroup the shortcut pointing to, and got 'Access Denied'.

When I use the Shortcut, get in fine using IDs/pwords as defined in
Workgroup.

I closed database, ran wrkgadm and for kicks tried to Join the system.mdw,
and got same 'Access Denied'.

thought..does the workgroup have to be defined in the version being used? In
other words, I created workgroup under Access 2002, though user has Access
2000. Guess that wouldn't explain why get 'Access denied' trying to join
system.mdw though..
 
Ok, maybe this is it: when you use workgroup admin to change the
defaiult workgroup file, it needs to write that to a registry key. If
you're on greater than win 9x, eg. XP or higher, that Windows user
might not have permission to write to that key. Try it from a Windows
Administrator account - I bet it works from there.

I'll have to check that. If that is the case, then i presume shortcuts on
network drive are best bet for roving users using different machines, etc.

Assume I'll need one for each possible Access version path...and assuming the
executable is in the default install location..?

WRKGADM just sets a registry entry. Your users don't have
permission to alter that registry value.

Yes, I guess it could be difficult for roving users on different PCs.
Perhaps you could write a small VBSCript program to determine the path
of Access at runtime? You should be able to get that from various
places in the registry; for example, the default value of the following
key:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths\MSACCESS.EXE

Then, you would not need to use a shortcut. Instead, you'd run the
VBScript, which would determine the path (from the registry), then
start Access (using the /wrkgrp switch), just like the shortcut would
have done.

Get back & tell me whether the "Access Denied" error disappears when
you try it as a Windows Administrator.

I have encountered a problem with a user being able to join a workgroup
through the Workgroup administrator when the user is not set up as an
administrator for their PC. You may have to get your IS department to make
them administrators temporarily or, else, have someone log on to the PCs as
an administrator.

Normally, users don't have permission to alter values in HKLM,

Instead, if you are setting up a shortcut, you can use the
/wrkgrp command line switch.
