Access denied when installing video driver.

Hi everybody:

I have a problem with my video driver, and I tried so many different things,
nothing work.

Here's the details:

Machine: DELL Dimension 4600C
RAM: 512MB
Windows XP Home SP2.
Onboard video controller: Intel 82865G

Problems:
Low resolution, can't change to higher one using setting properties.

What I did:
I ran virus/spywares cleaning and the computer is clean.

I got the drivers from Dell's website. Comp was using basic VGA driver at
the time.

During install, it gives error" access denied, can't finish install..."

Checked the driver signing properties, and changed to always allow, the same
result.
I tried to install manually by selecting "have disk" option, same result.

I downloaded the driver from Intel's website, and ran the file, I got "
unkown error, setup will know exits".

I ran the this file on my other computer(just to unzip) and copied the
folder to the DELL and point it to the folder.
Result: looked like the install bars go all the way but then it gave the
same error.

Booted to safe mode, gave permission to the other user (full access) and
tried to install from safe mode, same result.

Log in using Administrator in safe mode, tried to install, same result.

Created a new user with Administrator account and tried to install from both
safe mode and normal mode, no luck.

I even alternated the RAM chips (there are 2 inside) to see if the RAM were
bad, no luck.

Googled the issue, found something about using "subinacl.exe" from Microsoft
to give full access to all files, but I'm not sure how to use it. It sounds
like it's used more on servers.
Isn't that similar to open the permission in safe mode?

I'm at lost right now, can anybody help?

Thank's in advanced for any replies/suggestions

Check c:\windows\setupapi.log

This file logs hardware installations. MAy give us/you a clue as to where
the install is failing. If the log is too big and your not too surewaht to
look for rename setupapi.log and then try the driver installation again. This
will create a new log. Perhaps look for an entry Access Denied. Maybe post a
snippet of the information to be analyzed.

Hey, thank' for the response.
I renamed the log, and here's the new log.
I still get the same error message: "access denied.."
Here's the new log:

Here's the new log:

"Access denied" can be a file system error. You don't say what has lead
up to having found default VGA mode video.

From a command prompt run chkdsk /r . This will repair any file system
errors, check for bad blocks and map those out if possible. Following
this, find your XP install CD (not necessary if the folder
C:\Windows\i386 exists) and run from a command prompt: sfc /scannow to
repair any faulty system files. This will take some time.

Afterwards, reboot and try the video install again from an administrator
account.

Q

I have this identical problem. Had to reinstall XP after hal.dll got
damaged/went missing. Reinstalled using disk with SP2 on it - this was not
previously installed. Had to reinstall drivers as devices such as video
showing up as not installed (error 28). None of these devices (6 in all, all
different manufacturers etc.) will install.

The problem is absolutely something to do with SP2. How do I know? I had to
rebuild system appx 6 months ago and did not use disk with SP2 on it. No
problems encountered - plus many references on various forums to problems
after install of SP2.

I am really not happy about the idea of editing the registry to fix this.

setupapi.log shows following (subset):

Chkdsk shows no errors.

I am convinced this is an undocumented change in SP2 - any help would be
greatly appreciated.
