access denied using recovery console

w2k3. Lately, I experimented with what the RC can be capable of.
When I choose windows installation by number at the RC's logon's prompt, the
logon doesn't require neither name nor a password which is strange, then it
takes me to c:\windows root directory. From there I can go to c:\ and switch
to other drives and unable browse other root folders but c:\windows with its
subfolders due to access is denied. Is this a normal behavior of the
recovery console?

I have never seen a Recovery Console operation that did not
require the administrator's password.

To provide full access to all folders under Win2000, do this:
- Run gpedit.msc
- Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Windows Settings /
Security Settings /
Security Options / Recovery Console: Allow floppy disk access . . .
- Set this policy to "Enabled".
 
I found that w2k3 has an option:
Recovery console: Allow automatic administrative logon
Description
This security setting determines if the password for the Administrator
account must be given before access to the system is granted. If this option
is enabled, the Recovery Console does not require you to provide a password,
and it automatically logs on to the system.

The option you mentioned was enabled.
 
Even though I've enabled AllowAllPaths variable and can navigate the disk
space via regular dos commands, I cannot start Norton Commander. Are there
any ways to run a human file manager from within the RC?

Do I understand correctly that you are running Windows 2000 SP3?
Do you realize that you are posting to a Windows XP newsgroup?
You probably would do better posting to a Win2K newsgroup if that is correct.

XPUSER you are confusing the issue. the issue here is about w2k3 which, as
it implies, stands for Windows 2003 Server which is a successor of both w2k
and xp.
As there is no so far w2k3 dedicated newsgroup, I believe posting w2k3
questions to w2k, server and xp newsgroups to be choise possible.
 
The Recovery Console has nothing at all to do with DOS.
DOS is an operating system, and even though the Recovery
Console uses some commands such as "CD", it is definitely
not DOS. This becomes obvious when you're trying to run
executables that were written for DOS, such as NC. They
will never run under the RC. Type "help" to see what commands
are available.
