I had to reinstall winxp on my desktop. There was 1 user
account on the pc that previously had a password. After
the reinstall, I get an 'access denied' message when
trying to view the previously password protected folders.
I did recreate the user on the new install with the same
password, but it still won't let me in. Anybody know what
to do? Thanks

Hi

This should fix that:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

Well, I tried your suggestions and when I attempted to
force the share, I received an error message that it
could not share the folder...with access denied mentioned
again.

Any other suggestions? This is my daughter's folder with
all her term papers, etc. in it and she's freaking out!

Thanks

I am a newbie to these "communities", but have had sudden success after a
long stretch of blank stares and failed advice from even university
instructors.
I just fixed this exact problem with an additional FIRST step by going to
Knowledge Base 307874 for simple file sharing. I have NEVER had the
"security" tab show up in almost 3 years of using XP Pro. I many times
wondered why other security stuff wouldn't display like the wizards and
on-line help said it would. Here's how I got it to work.

Do the disabling of simple file sharing, then re-boot.
Do this 3 complete times but be sure and be working FROM an administrator
account.
(for some reason, mine would not respond and change with a single or even a
double re-boot)
This is described in the previously suggested 308421 about taking ownership,
but a single pass apparently didn't get the job done. Then, you should be
ready to follow the rest of the ownership stuff.

After 3 months trying, questioning, wating, and finally trying again, I just
recovered about 2 year's e-mail including lots of research notes.

Hope that helps your situation, and good luck !!
