Access denied on shared file

I have set up a network with desktop on ME and laptop on
XP Home. I can print from the laptop to printer connected
to desktop and can see the shared folders on desktop, but
can not access them. The folders are password protected
and the password box pops up but with no options to change
user box. The correct password does not provide access.
Any suggestions? I think it is a set ip in XP that I have
missed but if anyone has any sugestions I would appreciate
them. Thanks
 
What is the user account that it tries to use? Guest? If so, try turning on the guest account in control panel/user accounts
