Does anyone know of a way to get around this "error" in XP. I'm
running XP professional and I'm trying to get to other folders on my
hard drive outside of the windows folder, namely "my documents." I
have to do a repair installation but there is some research that I
cannot afford to lose that is on the computer.

Also, on a side note, is it possible to write to your CD drive from
the console?

Thanks,
Arch

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or folder
to which you have been denied access:

Here is a way to access/copy/delete any file on your hard drive:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ it's called BartPE and is used to make a boot
CD. Use the A43 file manager to access any file on NTFS hard drive. Everyone
should have a BartPE CD for emergencies.

Recovery Console, by default, has several limitations as to what it can
access; the Doc+Settings folder is off limits by default, so are all
removeable media drives. This is a safty precaution against someone
using RC to snoop your system. You can change this via Local Group Policy
Editor.

Search in Help and Support while connected to the net for "recovery
console", scan thru the list of KB articals, one of them will guide you
thru it.

your message inplied that you can't boot to xp - if so you can't run
Grp_policy, so you're sc*****ed.

SysInternals (www.sysinternals.com) has an NTFS driver for DOS that you
MAY be able to use w/ a DOS floppy disk boot setup to get at those files.

Or, consider plugging that HD into a friend's XP system and salvaging the
files that way.

Good Luck.
