Access Denied...how to get control of MY vista/win7 computer?

I need a pointer to a tutorial on how to get back
control of my computer. Have same problems in both
vista and windows-7 beta.

Access denied for most of what I want to do.
I'm trying to make hardware and software work in
windows-7. Permission problems, failure of older
install programs to execute, unable to register dlls,
it's a nightmare. Compatibility mode helps when you
have access to the executable file. When it's buried
inside an installer..not so much. Problem is same in Vista.

Here's a current situation.
wmplayer.exe is getting started by whoknowswhat
and interferes with other programs that need access
to the cdrom. I NEVER want to use wmplayer...although
I don't know what the side effects of turning it off might be...

Ok, let's try renaming wmplayer.exe so it can't run.
Sounds simple enough...but noooooo!!!
As administrator, I can't edit the file name.
I can't give myself permission to access the file.
I can take ownership of the file, but i still can't
rename it. I still can't give myself write privileges.
Seems like I'm always running into Access Denied problems.

There's a trusted installer group, but can't seem to
get added to it.

What can I do to make Vista give me back control
of my system so I can use it the way I want it?

Just to head off the trip in the wrong direction...
I don't need a lecture on security. Security that prevents
use of the machine is not helpful. I need help
REDUCING security so I can use my own darn computer.

Thanks, mike

Then you need to find out WHY wmplayer is starting. Doesn't start
automatically here - seems like you checked something you shouldn't have or
you have malware.

Taking ownership may not change the permissions, but it does give
the new owner the right to change the permissions.

See if this helps:

Thanks,
That's the first thing I did.
This is windows-7 beta...
I'm logged in as administrator.
I changed ownership of the file to administrators.
I changed properties to "full control"
for administrators.

I right click to rename the file using windows explorer
"You need permission from Administrators to make changes to this file"

If I use totalcommander to attempt the rename, i get:
"please remove write protection"

I also tried safe mode...no joy.

I went to the link. The .reg file context menu change
doesn't work for executable files.

wmplayer.exe is buried down in winsxs. Could there be permission problems
in higher level directories?
I really don't want to remove all permissions if I don't have to...just
want to change ONE file.

There's a icacls command that I haven't tried yet. Looks pretty drastic.

Thanks, mike

OK, let's take a side trip into wmplayer.
If I've got malware, it came on the downloaded .iso for win7 beta.

Windows media player is INTRUSIVE!!! WMPLAYER IS malware!!!
It tries to run any time you do anything related to audio or video.
I've turned off everything I can find, but still have file access problems
because wmplayer is accessing it for some unknown reason.

I'm sometimes unable to eject flash or USB media because it's "busy".
Killing wmplayer.exe lets me remove the card safely.
I DON'T WANT WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER TO RUN FOR ANY REASON...EVER.
I don't want DRM.
I don't want my media files managed.
I don't want any files accessed.
I want windows media player to go away and never come back.
How do I do that?
There's also
"windows media player network sharing service" that I think I don't
want...but, so far, have not identified it as causing a problem.

I understand that there's lots of stuff underlying wmplayer
that gets used by third-party programs. Need that stuff to stay.
If I wanted wmplayer to run, I'd click the wmplayer icon.
Otherwise it should stay out of my way. Renaming the file
is an attempt to accomplish that.

Probably the best option, the integrity level security mechanism may deny
you access before any other checks for permissions are done. Integrity
level denials trump any permissions the user may have.

Doesn't do so here. Have you set another media app as default? What file
associations are set up? Does Windows 7 (still in BETA by the way - I
presume you know what BETA is....) have an Autoplay setting like in Vista?
I'm sometimes unable to eject flash or USB media because it's "busy".

That's happened in Windows for ages......just ignore it

I suggest you ditch any sort of Windows and try this:
