I am trying to print to a shared network printer attached
to a system running winxp pro. The printer is a hpdeskjet
810c. I have enabled sharing the printer in XP. I am able
to print to the printer but when I try to look at the print
queue I see a message that says "Access denied, unable to
connect." I am able to access the printer properties I just
cannot see the queue.

This error looks almost exactly like Microsoft Knowledge
Base Article - 162695 which applies to windows NT. It does
not appear to be the same as 258742, which describes
intermittent errors, nor does it appear to be the same as
307053, which describes password errors on winxp home edition.

The article which appears to apply (162695) does not really
have any suggested fixes. Are there any suggestions for
fixing this?

Darren, I am quite pleased you performed your homework before posting.
When the user can still print what you are seeing is the spooler on the
"server" unable to authenticate with the spooler on the client.

The spooler service on the "server" updates information to the spooler
service on the "clients". When one opens the Printer on the client, the
server communicates to the client and will display any jobs in the queue
window. If there is a permission issue the client sees the access denied
message.

The 162695 KB applies to Win2k, and XP as well.

Is the firewall enabled on the machine where you see the access denied? You
may need to open the sharing ports on the client.
