Access database read only with NTFS

I am not sure if this is the proper place.

We have an access database on a NT server. It is not setup with ms access
workgroup/user permissions. However, I want some people to access the
database with read only, and some to be able to modify. If I set the NTFS
permissions on NT to read only, I get an error since it cannot create the
..ldb temporary file. I didnt want to change the database to have access
permissions since there are other VB programs that access it, and they would
require alterations. Is there a way around this?

Thanks,
Brian

Arvin,
Thank you for the information. I just downloaded the FAQ.
Thanks again,

I just wanted to offer a caution: read the Security FAQ "vewwwy carefuwwwy"
because it is no simpler now than in Access 2.0 days when Roger Jennings, in
his Access 2.0 Developer Guide, called it "labrynthine". But, read and
study, and ask questions (Did you know there is a Microsoft-sponsored
newsgroup just for security? Not surprisingly, it is
"microsoft.public.access.security".) and it will become less cloudy, at
least.

Another caveat: it is not crack-proof.
