Access Call To Outlook Express Not Working w/SP2

I have an Access 2000 program that sends reports out via Outlook Express.
Access actually calls up OE and sends the Access report as either HTML or
RTF (we determine which ahead of time). This is working at 10 or our
locations. We just installed SP2 at one of the locations and it no longer
works. We have disabled the security settins in OE that might block
attachements, but something else is going on. When Access attempts to send
the report we no longer even see OE called up (which we do at the other
locations).

Is there something in SP2 that would prevent Acess 2K from sending the
report to Outlook Express??

Is Outlook Express your default mail program? Try re-registering it as the
default and see if that fixes it:

Go to Start | Run and type the following:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
(Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct)

Make certain to include the quotations marks and the space between the
ending quotation mark and the slash.

Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools\Internet Options\Programs and
set OE as the default mail (and news) program.

Hard to say, without seeing some code.

Show the line that should (but doesn't) start OE.

Turn error-handling OFF (On Error GoTo 0) immediately before that line,
so the error (if any) is displayed at that point.

Did you also uncheck the security setting to in OE to Warn me if other applications try to
send mail?

"It no longer works" doesn't tell us much.
Exactly what happens?
Often SP2 has problems if spyware was already installed on a machine:
First eliminate any spyware.

I tried your suggestion -- no luck. I did find that this machine has setup
a hotmail account w/MSN and it was an option at Internet Explorer
Tools\Internet Options\Programs. But, it was not selected as the default.
I have posted a couple of screen shots of the error messages, if this might
help. Go to http://mynet11.tripod.com/accesserror.htm.

Here are several ideas on what might be causing this:

1. MSN Hotmail account (I have seen where MSN Hotmail may be a problem in
blocking access to Outlook, so maybe OE as well?)

2. AVG antivirus program (I have not uninstalled, but I have turned off
several monitors but not sure a complete uninstall might be in order).

3. Office service packs not up to date (I am attempting to do this remotely
and do not have the Office disk at the site and am reluctant to install the
updates without the disks there).

4. XP SP2 (I have just added all the updates)

Whatever it is, OE is just not getting the call from Access. By the way, we
are using the standard email feature from Access in the code.

Yes, this was done. I have run into that issue before and in those
instances OE did get the call and the Send box appears and gives us an
error. In this case, OE never gets the call. See error messages at
http://mynet11.tripod.com/accesserror.htm.

AdAware is run daily on the machine. By the way, this is a new machine. It
has not been on the net more than a few days and it has AVG antivirus (which
might be a sourece of the problem).
 
What version of the .NET framework do you have installed? See if the info
at this link gives any help:

Are you saying the *only* account is a Hotmail account? If so, you may be
running into a problem with WebDAV extensions, particularly a proxy server.
Server doesn't support WebDAV extensions.

Hi Jim,

I'll check on the .NET issue. Regarding the Hotmail account, it is "not"
the only account. It is an option as the default e-mail account in Internet
Tools. But, it is not selected as the default.

My version of .NET Framework is version 1.1.4322.573.

I have elminated all of the issues I mentioned prevously:

1. MSN Hotmail account
2. AVG antivirus program
3. Office service packs not up to date
4. XP SP2

I have also elminated MDAC versions and VB versions (but not JET versions
yet). I did all of this by comparing these with machines that did not have
the problem. I did not compare .NET Frame versons. I have since found a
few other machines that have the problem. They all are using MDAC 2.8.

On another note, I have had problems in general installing Access with MDAC
2.8. What I do to work around is go to references and cancel out the 2.8
ADO and Security reference and then browse to the ADO files and import a new
reference by selecting the file msadox.dll. This usually solves the
problems that Access has (which is not related to the Outlook Express issue
we are discussing here).
 
Well IC: I'm stumped then. Have you tried making Outlook (not Express) the
default mail program and seeing if it works then? Are you not getting any
answers from anyone in the Access newsgroups? That's somewhat surprising
since I don't see any. Good luck.

Thanks for working with me on this. I guess this one stumps everyone (from
the lack of replies)!

By the way, I do not have Outlook on the machine. Only Outlook Express, so
I can not change the default to Outlook.

I had a similar probem a year or so ago. It was related to embedding Word
in an Access report using an ADO to call Word. The problem turned out to be
with Norton AntiVirus and MS Works. Both, for some reason blocked the call.
Anyway, I was hoping this might be a similar problem.

What a stupid error. I'm glad you found it.

BTW, OE will not send in RTF format, so that could also contribute to the
problem. OE wil only use plain text and HTML. RTF is for Outlook.

Thanks for that feedback. Frustrating, I admit but glad it's now working.

I certainly agree it is quite "stupid."

With regard to the RTF format, it works on all of our machines with OE
Express.
 
FWIW, I notice lots of google groups hits for "MAPIX=1", dating back to
1996 at least! For example: "If Exchange is not installed, you can
enable the MAPI Send Mail commands in Word by a line reading MAPIX=1 to
the [Mail] section in WIN.INI.", etc. etc.
