Access and XP Service Pack 2

I have a question. Ever since I downloaded XP SP2, I have been unable to
open up Access databases that other individuals might have open. For
example. I can be on my 2000 box, and have the database open (db housed on
server), and then turn to my XP box and not be able to open it, yet I can go
to another 2000 box and I'd have no problem opening it. Now....I can close
the db on both the 2000 box's, and then at the time, I am able to open the
file on my XP box.

What is happening? And does anyone know how I can fix this.

How are you "not able" to open the database? Do you get an error
message? If so, what is it?

TC

The database just doesn't open. I don't get an error message....I just
double click (or right mouse click/left click Open) and nothing happens. The
hour glass spins for maybe a second or two and then nothing.

That sounds odd.

SP2 added more security features. Maybe that is something to do with
it? I'd be checking whether any other files do not start properly when
you double-click them. Also check the properties of the database file &
see if they show anything odd. Maybe ctrl-alt-del & see if you get any
clues from the task list. Are you sure there isn't a dialog box popping
up behind some other window?

Sorry, I can't think of anything else at the moment. Maybe someone else
can comment.

Try right-clicking and looking at the file properties. In the bottom you
might see an [UnBlock] button. If XP (SP2) knows that a file originated
from outside your local system (or a trusted site) then it will apply a
Block to that file that will prevent it from being run/open. Once unblocked
it will work normally.

I can't say that this is what you have because a blocked file will normally
produce a message of some kind when you try to use it, but it's worth
checking.

Thanks Rick.....

I will certainly give that a try when I get into the office on Monday.
Really I am up to try almost anything right now.

Thanks again Rick...and TC for your advise.

Rick, does this apply to files that are copied to the PC by an
installation program? If so, should installation programs now take
action to undo the block (on copied files), or ask the user to undo
them?

I don't have easy access to XP to investigate this. Doubtless someone
knows already, & can say.

TIA,

I can only speak from experience concerning files that are downloaded or
retrieved from Email. Those are both blocked. Zip files are really weird
because when you try to drag a file from within the zip file to another folder
you get an error indicating that that compressed volume might be corrupted.

Ok, thanks for that. I'll have to grab an XP machine to see if my main
product's install program still works!

PS. Check out the pettition that I have just posted about.

Cheers,
