My dearly beloved daughter managed to enter a new access password for Wxp,
and promptly forgot the password.
The computer has XP SP2 (maybe 3), and I can't get in to the system to
change it.

Can anyone advise me on the process - I am considering re-loadin XP Pro
(original version) to try to regain access to the system.

The question is, will this enable me to re-set the passward, and as an
adjunct question, will this wipe any of the out the data (apart from XP Pro
SP 2 and maybe 3))on the disk?

Have you tried the builtin Administrator account? At the log in screen press
Ctrl-Alt-Del twice and try to login as Administrator, the password will be
blank unless you set one when setting up the machine, otherwise the
following links may help.

Resetting the password or doing a repair install should not effect the
installed software but if you have encrypted data using EFS and have not
exported the encryption key you encrypted data will probably be lost for all
time.

Go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ . There you will find
zip files that will let you create boot floppy disks or bootable CDs
that will enable you to reset any system password on an NT class
operating system.
