Help! I purchased Office 2000, then upgraded to Office
XP. Now I'm working on a database for a company with
Access 97, and no matter what I try, I can't seem to find
a way to make a legitimate purchase. I've tried
everything I can think of to get my hands on the program.
What can I do?

Thanks!

See Tools|Database Utilities|Convert to Prior Version. Make it a point to
not use any new functionality from 2000 or XP in your database. You may
have to reset some references on the user's PC, but should be ok after that.

Alternatively, you could purchase Office Developer and distribute a
run-time, although this could cause some problems. You're usually safest to
use whatever version of Access is installed on the target PC.

But, if you really need a copy of Access 97 (say for final testing, just to
be sure), try the online auction sites. I've seen Office 97 and Access 97.
And there are some websites that specialize in "old software". Some
acquaintances of mine picked up copies of Office 97 Pro for a pittance at a
computer sale/swap meet -- they look legitimate to me, and as two of those
people got tech support from Microsoft, that would seem to verify that they
were. I seem to have misplaced the e-mail of the vendor, but you may be able
to find it with some diligent searching of my archived posts in
comp.databases.ms-access at http://groups.google.com -- I haven't been to
that monthly computer sale for over a year, so I don't know if they still
have copies or even if they are still in business. But the price was good
enough to warrant investigating.
