I have a xp pro machine running an access 97 application. Most of the
options under "File" have disappeared including "Print".

This applicaiton works fine on all other machines running 2000 and below.
Has anyone ran into this?

Thanks,
Brent

Brent:

1.) Are you running the db in read only mode or from a read only directory?
2.) If you choose Customize when you right click on the menu bar and bring
up the commands dialog can you drag the print command back onto the File
Menu or does it already exist but is simply dimmed?
3.) What level of privileges are you running under on XP? If user only,
there may simply be missing registry entries, which can be resolved by
opening the registry editor while logged on as an admin and for the keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\INTERFACE
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TYPELIB

Giving Everyone write permissions on those keys (Edit -> Security) as well
as read, then log back on as a user, launch Access (which should then run
normally) log out and back in as an admin and rest the permissions to read
only for Everyone on those keys. When you log back in as a user, everything
should be fine.

It's probably because XP autohides seldom used menu items. There ought to be
a little double-down carot thing at the bottom of the menu which you can
click on and it will give you all the items. My 2000 copy does the same
thing, along with other apps. It's because Microsoft wants to "clean up
clutter" etc. for users by 'hiding' things they don't need.

HTH!

I tried these possible solutions and nothing worked. In access I have all
of the options until I preview a report and most of my menu options
disappear. All I have left is "File" and "Window". Under "File" is
"Close" and "Exit". I am baffled because it has worked fine in other
operating systems for years.

Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Brent

I now just tried the access97 with another xp machine and it works fine. I
just thought I would pass that info to you.

It sounds as if you are opening the db in a run time environment. If you
are simply clicking on the mdb, and it opens, then you may have an instance
of the Access 97 run time on that box and its using that to open the db.
Try launching the full version of Access first then open the db. If that
works then you've got an association problem that can be solved by opening
and explorer window and from the Tools Menu choosing options and modifying
the executable associated with the mdb file extension.
