I am just learning some of the features of Access and have
come across an issue that is driving me nuts.

When I link to an excel spreadsheet, my data does not come
in as it should. For example: The first 2 columns of my
spreadsheet have been designed as text. However, when I
link the file to an access 97 dbase, the second column
comes in as numeric. And unless I sort my data in the
spreadsheet before calling up the dbase and linking to
excel, the data in the first field comes in as numeric and
will not recognize any of the alpha items in that field.
Can any one help me figure this out?

Also, it works if I just do an import. But won't if I
make a link.

The Link (and Import) Wizard looks at the first X number
of rows and decides whether the Column is Text or Numeric.
Unfortunately, Excel spreadsheets can have mixed columns
but not Access Tables.

I am not sure about A97 / XL97 but when I edited a linked
XL2K spreadsheet in A2K, I corrupted the whole XL file.
Since then, I never linked XL spreadsheets to Access.

If you want to import the spreadsheet to the database, use
the spreadsheet function Text() (see XL Help) to
create "calculated" columns which have all values from the
original columns converted to Text. Then you can import
these calculated columns.
