Office 97 almost works on my Win XP SP2 machine.
Access 97 cannot retrieve external data. The error msg is to the effect
that I do not have access to the folder containing the file I want. The
drop
down menu in the "Get External Data" box is not fully populated which must
be
a clue. I have re-installed Office 97... also all of the upgrades including
the Jet 35 update. It seems likely to be a Win XP problem, but ???
Possibly related ... all of the folders on this machine have a dimmed check
in the 'Read Only' checkbox. It cannot be changed!

Can you view, and open those files through the regular windows explorer?

Try copying a file form that folder to your local pc, and then doing the
import. Perhaps this is just a simple permissions problem here, and nothing
to do with ms-access.

I run a97 on LOTs and LOTS of windows xp sp2 machines, and I had NO
problems...it runs just fine for me...

So, what happens when you copy the files to your local pc first, and then
import/use it with ms-access? (sounds like some network permissions issue
here).

I believe it is a permission problem (with xp?)
I, too, have Office 97 on another Win XP machine and NO problems.
Copied files to other folders ... no change
And, yes, all of the files do work independently.
A mystery is that the drop down menu in the "Get Ext Data" window is NOT
populated on this machine as it is on others.
For example, file extensions for txt, csv, xls, etc are conspicuously absent
even though Office installer says they are installed.
Perhaps the problem is with the Office 97 installation although I have
re-installed and put the updates.

Ah, ok, so your problem is not permissions, but simply that import filters
are missing!!! That is a known problem, and you can re-register the filters.
