I've just replaced my laptop. I've retired the old machine and am trying to
install Access 97 on the new box. I have the upgrade version of Acess 97
and the installer doesn't recognize my install CD of Office 97 Small
Business as a qualifying product.

This problem is acknowledged in KB article 167589 but their solution is to
call MS tech support. Can anyone tell me what the solution is to save me
the pain of trying to get MS tech on the phone?

Tnx.

Hi Jeff,

Would you be interested in donating your old laptop to an organization of
educators? The organization's name is Keystone State Reading Association. It is
an organization of educators and its mission is to promote literacy to children
and to provide professional development for literacy educators. They would pay
all shipping costs. If you are intersted in this very worthwhile cause, contact
me at the email address below.

Stephen....

Under different circumstances the answer would be a definite yes. However,
I'm a fish out of water without a laptop when I'm traveling. I bought a new
travel machine with it in mind to put my still working old machine on the
shelf as a spare, which is what I've done.

Sorry.

The only alternative that comes to mind is to ask around among your friends
and co-workers to see if any of them has one of the other qualifying
products (Access 1.0, 2.0, 95, etc.) as listed in the KB article that they
would sell you.

hth,

I have a friend who's going to lend me the install floppy from another
qualifying product Cheryl. But doesn't it seem wrong that I have to do that
when I own a product that MS' own KB article says is qualifying?

Thanks, Jeff, for your consideration! Just thought I would ask when you said you
retired your old laptop. I appreciate where your heart is at if it had been
different circumstances. If you hear of any retired laptops that someone might
be willing to donate, please keep me in mind. KSRA is a very worthwhile
organization.

Remember you said that you have an Upgrade copy of Access 97. This CD
assumes you had installed a full version prior to buying the 97 Upgrade. You
must of had a full version on your old laptop at one time in order to
install and upgrade to 97. What happened to those disks?

The above situation is the very reason that I like buying full versions of
everything and only purchase the upgrade when I know I have a full previous
version to install.

I read your statement again and the problem is that the Small Business
version did not come with Access so the Access 97 upgrade CD won't work as
there isn't a 'qualifying' full version of Access on your new laptop.

Your explanation is not how I understand the situtation.

Every "upgrade" version of a product I've ever bought, including Access 97,
allows for the fact that you might have uninstalled the qualifying product
before installing the new product you're installing. The procedure is
always the same....the new product's installer tells you it can't find a
qualifying product on your hard drive and asks you to point to it, at which
time you insert the install disc/diskette from the qualifier and point to
it, and the install continues.

Let me quote the MS Knowledgebase artricle I referred to in my original
post:

"If you own one of a selected list of database programs, you qualify for the
Microsoft Access competitive upgrade, which entitles you to buy an upgrade
version of Microsoft Access at a reduced price. The Setup program checks for
a qualifying competitive database program before it installs Microsoft
Access.

Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition for Windows is one of the
products that qualifies for the Microsoft Access competitive upgrade
program; however, the Setup program does not to recognize it as such......"

and

"Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the upgrade version of
Microsoft Access 97. "

So instead of just telling me to contact support, which probably won't do
any good anyway 7 years after the date of purchase, why not make a solution
available in the KB article?

Always buying the full, vs. upgrade, version is one solution. But at the
sometimes cost of hundreds of dollars more, I choose to accept the upgrade
version when I qualify for it.
