I have had a database shared over a peer to peer network for over 5 years
(originally access 1997) with no problem. Recently one of the PC's (windows
XP Prof) can not open it, it comes up with a message to say that the database
is outside the workgroup so it will not open it. The same has just happened
with a new PC (Vista). Can anyone tell me what has happened? How do I fix
it? I suspect that the XP machine is caused by a Microsoft Patch.

Try adding the network resource hosting the database to the Trusted Sites section on your Internet Explorer's Security
tab.

Hi Scott, sorry for the delay, the message reads:

"Microsft Access cannot open this file
This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site.
Microsoft Access will not open the file due to potential security problems.
To open the file, copy it to your machine or an accessible network location"

It is on a peer to peer PC acting as a server, the address is given out by
the router, it is accessible to any PC on the workgroup. I have tried making
it a trusted site but it doesnt help. I have tried turning off the firewall.

Still sounds as if you somehow haven't correctly added the network resource to the trusted sites correctly. Read this KB
article, if you haven't already:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303650

If you have followed these steps exactly, then try removing the site, rebooting the macine, then adding the site again.

Are you saying the router operates as the DHCP server and assigns IP addresses? If so, can you tell the router to assign
the server PC a static IP address, then make sure to add that address to the Trusted Sites section?
