Accepting meetings without sending a response

When I accept a meeting notice, it gives me a pop up box asking if I want to
send a email response or not to send one back to the owner. If I choose NOT
to send a response back then in the Tracking tab, it doesn't show that I have
accepted the meeting. But if I do send a response back it DOES show that I
have accepted the meeting. Why does this appear this way?

How would you expect it to work? If you notify the meeting organizer that
you have accepted, then it will show you as having accepted. I don't
understand the confusion.
