Acc2000: Weird characters appear when OutputTo as RTF

I have an Access 2000 database in which I'm programmatically saving a
multi-page report using the OutPutTo command as RTF. Once you view the RTF in
Word, strange characters appear (actually phrases) such as "f4b1" and "!
b73", scattered throughout various areas of the page, adjacent to the text.
This screws up formatting and appears intermittently on each page.

Any ideas?

We're running Office 2000 with SP3.
