Does anyone know - is the Academic version same as full Professional, only
volume discount for schools? How many times can I load?

I assume you can install it on one machine. For multiple installations, I
would think you'd need a 'volume licence' for the classroom for example; but
usually they are sold as stand alone packages (single licence) for use by
students at home.

The limitation is it can't be upgraded to the other Office products i.e. the
Academic Frontpage can't be used as an upgrade product (qualifying product
for an upgrade) to a higher version of the same product. ie. you can't use
Academic version of Office 2003 to upgrade to Office 2003 Professional.

Otherwise it is a fully functioning version.

Academic versions are the same as the full version of same product
- unable to be upgrade or be used for upgrades
- you can only "load" it for 1 licensed user

The licensed individual academic user can install on two machines. I
have FP 2003 on my desktop and laptop, installed with no problems.
Although you can't upgrade to a newer version, there's no reason to want
to, since for most software the academic full version will be priced
lower than the publicly available upgrade.
