Abtrusion any good?

Why does nobody on this NG appear to use the Abtrusion anti-virus system?

It needs no regular (daily?) updating, and it seems an obvious approach to
the virus problem, not to allow unknown software to run on a PC.

Is it so good that users do not feel any need to post on the subject? Or is
it so bad that people are embarassed to be caught with it? :-)

I would be grateful if anybody with experience of it would comment, as I am
thinking of switching to it in preference to AVG.

TIA

or is it so obscure that most people have simply not heard of it...

i'll choose door number 3...

white listing is a good enough idea, but i can't speak to the
implementation...

it's worth noting, however, that even though a properly implemented
application launch white list will prevent unauthorized applications
from being executed it won't stop people you from authorizing the wrong
programs...

Never heard of it before. Web site describes it as a file integrity checker, that
also asks the user for permission before allowing the execution of any new or
modified programs, or libraries.

Most end users don't have the knowledge needed to understand what programs
or libraries are, let alone make the correct decisions, regarding what should be
allowed, so they end up clicking "ok" to the wrong things. The ones that do
understand, are the ones who least need such a product.

Doesn't protect against executables that are not loaded by the kernel, such
as macros, or scripts. Won't prevent installation of trojans, where the user
knows theyr'e installing something, but don't realize it is a trojan.
Available for NT based systems only.

Because it is NOT anti-virus software!!! Did you even read the product's
description? It is a general-purpose security product to prevent
unauthorized execution of any program whether it is a virally infected
program, spyware, malware, or even a word processor. It is an intrusion
prevention scheme, like Prevx and System Safety Monitor. Don't lump
every piece of protection or security software under the category of an
anti-virus product.

Thanks to Kurt and David for your thoughts on the subject of Abtrusion.

It certainly seems as if you are representative of the majority, as nobody
else seems to use it!

I see it discussed a lot on DSLreports forums, as well as comparisons to
System Safety Monitor. I haven't seen much on Prevx yet, and i believe
it's still fairly new.

As noted above, these products are more like HIPS or application
firewalls than antivirus.

I should say that 'application firewall' was quite a good definition of an
anti-virus system!
