This is absolutely uncommon.
I ve got two hd on my pc, some time ago, one of the two (maybe was a
virus i do not remembre) stopped working properly, I have not been
able to format it, not to see the contents in it..but i cannot remove
it from the system.. as the the master hd is not recognized by the
system when the slave (not functioning) hd is removed..

Does any body have any idea y?

If the master is a western digital drive, that is because they have a
different jumper config when there is just one drive on the ribbon cable
and when the drive is a master in a pair and cable select isnt used.

What HDs, I mean maker? (IIRC) If Maxtor (or was it WD), the jumper settings
on the HD is "Master w/o slave" and "Master w/ slave"....
