Absolute vs. Relative Hyperlinks

I'm using Word 2003 and am saving Word files as Single File Web Pages using
the *.mht file format on my hard drive. I have imported these files into
FrontPage 2002 and then use FrontPage to publish them. These *.mht files
have hyperlinks that point to pages in the same folder, but in the browser,
the hyperlinks
still reference my hard drive. See the Home and Rates hyperlinks at
http://caot.lacc.cc.ca.us/Unit23/Report_117-102.mht. FrontPage resolves
hyperlinks with *.htm files, but I have to use Word's *.mht files for a
special project I'm working on.

To publish these files to the Web using Word, I use these steps: File, Save
As Web Page; click My Network Places, and browse to the desired directory on
the server, and click Save. This didn't help either.

My pages have hyperlinks to other pages in the same folder.

I found the information about setting a hyperlink base in Word 2003 Help,
but it didn't help either, and I've also posted to the Word newsgroup, but I
haven't gotten much help there since this is fairly technical. All comments
greatly appreciated.

FP can not manage links that are within the .mht files, you have set these
as needed in Word as absolute URLs to where the content will be located
within the live web site.

Note: NS6 user can not open/view .mht files

Hi, Thomsas, and thanks for the response. I realize this is a Word question,
but how can I set them to relative hyperlinks so they reference a folder
only rather than a specific address anywhere?

You would just enter the filename in the Word Hyperlink dialog, however Word
may change them when saving/creating the .mht file.

Word will keep the single file name in the hyperlink, but only if I enter
the full path except for the file name in the hyperlink base, and then I'm
back to the same problem once again. There just doesn't seem to be a way
around this.

Why not just create these pages directly in FP, since using the .mht format
eliminate any NS users from viewing the content?

I'm an author on a keyboarding and word processing textbook that teaches
students to use Word for many applications, one of which is creataing and
saving Web pages. The textbook uses a sophisticated software program that
uploads student files for grading, etc., to a commercial server and
unfortunately the software cannot manager any file that has any supporting
files or folders--for both of these reasons, I have to use Word for Web page
creation and I must use Words *.mht format rather than *.htm due to the need
to have one encapsulated file when I'm finsihed rather than the original
file and supporting files or folders for graphics, etc.

In essence, I'm stuck with these issues and will have to come to some
resolution. I also teach FrontPage and so am familiar with both packages. I
think I"m just going to have to warn students that once they publish their
files over to any given location on a server, they're going to have to
manually edit their links to point to the server directories rather than
their local hard drive and directories. Maybe someone will come up with an
answer, but for now, that seems to be the only way out. In checking the Word
newsgroup, I see many questions posted on similar issues related to these
absolute hyperlink problems.

FYI: A Word article at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;159940 indicates
that a relative hyperlink would include the file name plus the parent
directory. Below is a copy/paste from the article. I tried once again using
the relative path that includes the parent directory and Word keeps changing
the hyperlink back to the full absolute address.

Question: What is the difference between a relative and an absolute
hyperlink?

Answer: An absolute hyperlink jumps to the destination document using its
full address; a relative hyperlink uses the address relative to the
containing document's address, also known as the hyperlink base. For
example, suppose that a document whose address is "c:\My Documents\1996
report.doc" has absolute and relative hyperlinks to a document whose full
address (and absolute hyperlink) is "c:\My Documents\April\Sales.doc." The
relative hyperlink will only contain the relative address to Sales.doc,
which is "April\Sales.doc." Use a relative link if you want to move or copy
your files to another location, such as a Web server.

Have you tried importing the MS W doc and associated files into FP
(so the relative paths are correct in the final .mht)
And then right clicking the .doc to open it w/ MS W to save as a .mht
- you may need to turn off FP interfering w/ MS W in Tools Options General (Startup)

Hi, Stefan--no, I haven't tried that, but it wouldn't help because unless my
students can do it, and they won't have FrontPage, it doesn't make sense to
pursue that as a solution. Thank anyhow. That sounds like a clever
workaround.
