Henry

my computer will abruptly shut down without warning, must
shut off power and back on to reboot, no scandisk will
run, apeares to be in stand by mode.

To Henry's post that his system shuts down abruptly, Tom
Swift replied with a link to Microsoft talking about
porblems when shutting down. Henry doesn't have a
problem when shutting down-- his problem is, like many if
you're reading the posts here, that the PC shuts down--
screen goes black and then PC restarts--without his
wanting it to.

If Microsoft is reading these posts--if it isn't, why
not?--buyers of its expensive software are having
problems because their PCs are shutting down or freezing,
and they don't know why.

Other than the check box under "Automatic restart"
in "System," "Startup and recovery," is there a setting
I'm missing?

As I said, it's the unwanted shutdowns that are annoying,
not the automatic restart. If you're reading the posts
here, you can see it is a general problem that many are
reporting.

Event viewer doesn't really help. Errors are reported
(on my PC, source "parvd"), over and over, that don't
always cause a shutdown.

i dont know if what youre experiencing is the sam as mine, but the abrupt shutdown i have mostly occur when im playing a game, sometimes even when my pc is idle. it just turns off, theres no system check afterwards or anything. as if windows didnt even detect it.
