Simple question.
I'm about to put a backup server on my Active Directory
Domain. As of now I only have one server running Active
Directory.
Is there anything I should be aware of before I add/join
the second server on to the domain that I should be aware
of not to do?
Thanks

John,
I generally really like to suggest to everyone that they
install the Support Tools on each and every server. The
Support Tools can be located on either the WIN2000 Server
CD or on the WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the Support |
Tools folder. The Service Pack CD would be the better
choice of the two...
There is nothing really do worry about in doing this. I
would simply install WIN2000 Server as a Member Server.
You might want to then run a couple of tests on this
using some of the Support Tools utilities. You might
want to take a look at netdiag and nltest and netdom.
Then, simply run dcpromo from the command prompt. You
just need to make sure that you join this server as an
additional domain controller to an existing domain. The
process generally does not take all that long.
As always, make sure that initially your DNS is pointing
to your internal DNS Server's IP Address. You will have
to have this straight befroe you can join the domain
anyway!
If you want to add a little more redundancy, consider
installing Active Directory Integrated DNS on this second
DC as well ( assuming that your current DNS is ADI - if
not, then make it a secondary ). Do not forget to change
your DHCP Scope to reflect the second DNS Server ( so
that all of your clients are aware ) as well.
