I got XP Home on my Dell 2200 about 1 1/2 years ago. Within the past few months several installed software
programs were not working. Installed SP1 and ran the work killer program this weekend, Now System Restore
does not come up when clicked, Media Player doesn't open (even after downloading again last night) etc. etc.
It has reached the point where I'm about to throw in the towel. I would love to:

1) First try a Repair and if that doesn't work then,

2) Reinstall XP from the CD

Can someone help on providing instructions on executingthis last ditch plan or perhaps provide an alternative, other
than suicide. Thanks!!!!!

First backup all your personal data you want to save. Then insert
your winXP installation CD in your drive. Reboot the system and boot
from the CD. Install the OS again. You will be given the option to put
it where it was or in a new partition. Best bet is to reformat your hard
drive then reinstall a nice fresh clean copy. Just follow the bouncing
ball during the initial setup procedure and you shouldn't have any
problems. Good Luck

Thanks Doug. If I read you right, you wrote to reformat my hard drive before the install. How do I do that?
What issues might I have if I don't? Thanks!

Like my previous post stated"follow the bouncing ball", kind of a smart
ass remark meaning follow the instructions. Once you boot from your XP
CD it will walk you through everything from deleting the existing
partition, reformatting the partition (use NTFS) and OS installation.
Cheers Doug

Barb;
Repair Installation:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
Windows Updates will need to be reinstalled.
Data should be safe, back-up important data just in case.
Install Service Pack first and by itself.
Then install ALL Critical Updates no more than 4 at a time,
Disconnect the network/modem cable before starting repair and do NOT
reconnect the cable until repair is completed and firewall is
installed/enabled.

Clean Installation
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
If you are installing using Windows XP Upgrade, insert qualifying
media in Step 4b.
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.
Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673
Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update
After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.
If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.

Thanks so much. I was wondering whether the Service Pack 1 is available on CD. I think the download
may have exacerbated my problem. Thanks again!!!

You indicate "Go to BIOS and set CD ROM as boot device before hard drive". Can you tell me how to do this
I am a REAL Novice. Thanks!!

For the UK you can get a free Service Pack 1 CD direct from Microsoft by
phoning; 0870 601 0100

Might take a couple of weeks to arrive but then it's there for you to use
anytime.
