Hello. If you desire to edit features of the Local Security Policy in Vista
Home Premium via the LocalSecurityPolicy snapin (as XP and Media Center both
had), you'll need to look to the registry.
Home Premium does NOT allow you to install the LocalSecurityPolicy snapin in
the MMC. Try it for yourself: (Start - Run - MMC - File - AddRemoveSnapin -
LocalUsersAndGroups). Attempting to run 'secpol.msc' also results in
failure.
I just upgraded to Vista Home Premium from MediaCenter Edition (upgrade -
not a fresh install), and desired to change the Interactive Login Text that
still appeared, not realizing that I could no longer easily edit it as the
LocalSecurity snapin is not available in Home Premium.
After hunting around, here's the registry location where you can change such
features in Home Premium:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
The legalnoticecaption key is the title of your interactive login textbox
and the legalnoticetext key is the actual contents of the interactive login
textbox.
As for the other keys in that folder, just modify the ValueData as needed to
edit the specific features such as dontdisplaylastusername or whatever else
you wish.
I sure hope someone out there comes up with a hack to get the
LocalSecurityPolicy installed as an MMC on Vista Home Premium - not having it
is a royal pain.
