Dongle is a hardware device that fits on the printer port. It used for
security reasons.

Greetings --

There's no such thing as a "software" dongle. A security dongle
is a physical device containing an EPROM that bears the pertinent
software-enabling code. These devices were most often attached to the
parallel port of the workstation on which the controlled application
was installed. Of course, security dongles are now something of a
curiosity, and an antique one at that, as modern operation systems
make it difficult for software applications to directly address
hardware devices.

Actually some brand new software - I mean newly issued - I just bought
here uses them. Seems to work okay with W2K although we have not
really started using that software on a regular basis yet.
