Hello, new to the group. If I have posted in the wrong place sorry and
please direct me to the correct NG.
I have contracted 'about:blank' virus. i have tried many of the self helps
to no avail. This one is so bad it removed my restore points (OS-XP PRo).
My question; would downloading the most resent version of IE or this SP2
help. (I don't realisticly think so) but I'm grasping at straws here.

No, downloading SP2 won't help.
