Aborted XP Pro installation

During a product upgrade from Win98 to XP Pro (from a full
retail version), the installation routine got to "13
minutes to completion" and then stopped with the error
message box:

"The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in
the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL"

The computer remains at the error message after repeated
pressing of the "OK" button, and the message window keeps
refreshing. I'm pretty sure the install (and the drive)
is hosed, although I have a complete back up.

Why in Hades would Microsoft have an installation
procedure with such poor error recovery, and such cryptic
error messages? The time we waste waiting for reboots is
10% of our professional lives!

This is what makes those of us who grew up on DOS and UNIX
wonder how in the world Windows has gotten to be what it
is. If I'd known Windows would be the dominant OS 15
years ago, I'd have quit and opened a malt shop or
something.

Anyone have any suggestions? I can't ask Microsoft for
help because they require a product code, and the code
must be read from a succesfully installed product!

Thanks!!!!

A few things to try.

1) Do you have SQL components installed? If so, try uninstalling those
first then perform the upgrade.

2) Upgrade your MDAC components to the latest version. The current
version is 2.8 and can be found at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en.

3) Try renaming msdart.dll to msdart32.dll

4) During install when you get the error press shift+F10. This will
bring up a command prompt window. There type in taskmgr.exe and the
Windows Task Manager will be launched. Select the error message window in
the list of running applications and click End Task. Switch to the
processes tab in Task Manager. Find unregmp2.exe, right click on it and
select End Process. Close task manager and exit the command prompt
window.
