Able to print one minute, Not able to print the next minute...

Trying to print from an XP computer to a printer that is connect to a 2000
computer. Add the printer (HP Photosmart) is no problem. It seems that I
can print right after I log onto the XP machine. But, after about 15
minutes, I'll get a message like "Windows cannot print due to a setup
problem..." Other times it says, the print spooler service is not running
when it is.

It seems that if I don't print something every couple of minutes the
connection goes to sleep. All I can think of is to either lock the computer
and unlock it, log off then log back on, or stop the print spooler service
and then restart it. The only thing that seems to work every time is if I
log off and log back on, which is also time consuming.

It would be helpful if there was a way to not have to refresh all of these
items throught the day. Please Help!

Is it only the XP PC that has these problems with the printer... or do they
also manifest themselves on the Windows 2000 PC?

How many other PCs connect to the Windows 2000 PC?

Check your USB ports in the Device Manager properties. They are
probably set to sleep when not in use to save power.

Hi,

What's the printer? Model
What's the connectiviy?
How many computers are there in ur netwok, and how they are connected
to each other..

It is only the XP PCs, and there 2 computers that connect to the 2000
computer. We do not have this problem on computers that are running Windows
2000.

How do I find out if the USB port is set to sleep? I went to the device
manager and all I found in the properties were driver properties.

If you are referring to the Power Options in the Control Panel, I look at
that. The setting was Home/Office Desk and the hard disk setting was "Always
On". I could not find any other dialog with a tab for power management .
Nor could I find anything in the Device Manager regarding the USB ports. All
I found in there was driver info.

Am I looking in the right places?

No. In Device Manager, double click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers....
you should get a long list (depending on how many ports you have). Click on
each USB Root Hub entry.... now you'll see the Power Management tab.

Ah! There it is. So do I assume that I should clear the check box that
allows the computer to turn that off to save power? That seems like the
right thing to do...

Thanks for your help. I truly appreciate it.
