if u got the cash go for an abit AA8 Fatal1ty

with some DDR2 PC4300 memory

get a p4 3.0Ghz skt775

gamers dream, well with a faster processor but the 3.0 is cheapest 775

If its 478, I would go with the IS7. Get some low latency DDR 3200 (not
DDR2) for that extra performance. One question though, What video card are
you planning on useing?

The sockett will depend on what MB i end up with ... is there a
differance other than price

The Socket 478 boards are the older of the two. Newer boards using Socket
775 often require regular the newer, more expensive DDR2 memory, depending
on the chipset. New chipsets will often require a PCI-Express video card as
well.

The Abit AS8-3rd Eye might be a board to looks at. (PC3200 memory, Socket
775, and AGP video)

The Athlon64. Two choices are available: Socket 754, and Socket 939.
Choose the latter for a longer upgrade path. Boards using the Nforce4
chipset have, in general, PCI-Express video. Mainboards built on the VIA
K8T800/K8T800 Pro use AGP video. The lesser known K8T890 has PCI-Express
video. Most all Athlon64 boards use PC3200 DDR RAM.
