I don't know HOW MANY times I have changed the email for some of myold
contacts, but not matter what I do, whenever I then try to send an email to
that contact, the old email address comes up. WHY???????????

If I do a search in my contacts for the OLD EMAIL ADDRESS, my contact comes
up, even though the email field has the NEW ADDRESS!!! *WHAT* is going on??
This is VERY frustrating. I cannot tell you how many times my contacts keep
emailing me BACK saying, "WELL, I GAVE YOU MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS."

PLEASE HELP.

You failed to mention how you are selecting your recipient.
If you are using your autocompletion cache, then changing the Contact record
won't do a thing.

Thank you for your response. I'll try to calm myself... :)

Yes - it seems that I am choosing from the auto complete entries. Is there
some way to reset that cache? But, as I said above, even if I do a search
for the old email addresses in my contacts, the Contact that used to have
that email address shows up in the list - even though the old address is not
in the contact anymore.

Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion cache by highlighting
the entry when presented in the suggested names list (use your arrow key to
migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete key before you tab out of
the field. If your autocomplete list contains only a single entry, use the
directions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289975

To clear the entire cache, follow the instructions here:

Ok I deleted the cache. But it has not solved my problem. Let me give a
detailed explanation:

I have a contact John Doe whose email address used to be (e-mail address removed).

I have changed John's email address to (e-mail address removed).

When I do a search in contacts for "erols" John Doe's name comes up, even
though his old address does not seem to be stored anywhere in his contact
information.

WORSE - When I write a new email and in the TO: field I type "John Doe", and
then hit send the "CHECK NAMES" dialog box opens because I also have John Doe
Jr. in there. Of the two options listed, JOHN DOE and JOHN DOE JR. (not the
one I want) JOHN DOE's email address field says (e-mail address removed).

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING??? THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE OPERATION. YOU CHANGE THE
EMAIL ADDRESS AND IT CHANGES. ONLY OUTLOOK DOES NOT CHANGE. I HONESTLY
CANNOT THINK OF A MORE BASIC OPERATION FOR A PROGRAM LIKE OUTLOOK THAN THIS...

I work with large email distribution lists and cannot go through and "double
check" Outlook everytime I send out an email. Is this program going to work
or not? If not, I MUST use something reliable.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention:

Clearing the autocompletion cache has worked reliably for everyone else.
There must be more to your story than you've told.
You have not mentioned your Outlook version.
You have not mentioned whether this was a clean install.
You have not mentioned what information store you are using nor how many
Contact Folders actually reside in your profile.
Nor are you using autocompletion. You are using autoresolution.

Clearing the autocompletion cache has worked reliably for everyone else.
There must be more to your story than you've told.

I'm not sure what else to tell. I'll answer your questions below.
You have not mentioned your Outlook version.

I am using Outlook 2002 (10.6515.6626) SP3
You have not mentioned whether this was a clean install.

I suppose it was a clean install. Outlook was installed when I installed
Office XP.
You have not mentioned what information store you are using nor how many
Contact Folders actually reside in your profile.

I don't know what an information store is so I can't answer your question as
to which one I am using. I didn't know there was even one, much less
multiple ones from which to choose. I have only one contact folder in my
profile.
Nor are you using autocompletion. You are using autoresolution.

I'm not sure what the difference between autocompletion and autoresolution
is nor (more importantly) what relevance it has to why Outlook is not working
properly.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Right on, Scott. Persist.

Why a knowledgeable, but not necessarily expert, user should need to
know such poorly explained aspects of Outlook as autocompletion and
autoresolution and information stores to do something basic is beyond
me too. It is particularly galling when the implementation changes
between successive versions, sometimes very significantly, and then
changes again.

You will find that pointing this out when you are trying to get your
problem solved is counter-productive. It almost always engenders a
defensive reaction on the part of the MVPs, who CAN and DO help, often
without thanks.

OK. Let me back up a bit, then. Information store just means where your
Outlook data is stored. If you are running against Exchange Server, it will
be stored on your mailbox on the Exchange Server. If you are running
standalone it will be in a local Outlook Data File (PST file). It matters
because it might explain why you would be pulling in entries you would not
expect to pull in when you do lookups.

The reason it is so important to know exactly how you are trying to enter
addresses is that autocompletion (which suggests names while you type in the
To field) uses completely different data than autoresolution (which searches
your Contacts data when you run "Check Names"). When you said you were using
autocompletion, I knew that clearing the autocompletion cache would solve
your problem. Later on, as you provided a little bit more information it
turns out you were actually using autoresolution, so now we need to look for
different explanations for the behavior you are seeing.
When autoresolution turns up entries you thought you'd deleted there are
several possibilities:
1. This is an upgrade installation where your Outlook profile retained
outdated links to old data files (such as a NICK file from Outlook 2000).
2. You have more than one set of Contact Folders in your profile, which can
happen when you import or migrate Outlook data incorrectly.
3. You had not restarted Outlook after making changes.

Bottom line is that it's impossible to provide a simple solution from afar
without knowing a whole lot more about your setup.

Not bloody likely. No one knows better how frustrating Outlook can be than
MVP's and no one is quicker to point out those shortcomings.
As for how much we "expect" users to know, there are no such expectations
and certainly no way to discern the level of expertise a user has from the
paltry information in most posts. So you take your best guess and shoot for
the middle. When about half the people feel you are patronizing them and the
other half feel you are talking over their head, I figure I've got the
balance about right. Either way, I can't win.
Bottom line remains that leaving out basic information like Outlook version,
Outlook configuration and accurate steps to reproduce the problem almost
ensures a long battle ahead.

Very full and complete answer, Russ. Thanks a lot. Your answers can
be great when you take the time. I know you probably don't always have
much time. Folks often underestimate how much emotion comes through on
an e-mail and the effect it has on the recipient -- or even an
observer-lurker.

You hit the nail on the head. Time is the most precious commodity for
all of us. If there were no limits on time it would be easy to craft
soothing, patient answers to every post even if it took several days of
exchanging replies to unravel what the poster was really asking, what
their level of expertise was, and then tailoring a response to their
level of expertise.

But this is Usenet, not Customer Support. This is triage in the ER. In
the ER very few patients give sufficient information to diagnose a
problem accurately. So you ask a few pointed questions right away to cut
to the quick, send off some labs, move on to the next patient, and
return when you have some real information with which to make a
diagnosis. It's the only way I know how to work.
