40 PC SOCKET SET

Many of you will find ehen installing the nVidia Firewall, that it reports failure to copy files at the end of the install proces, I did. I reported the problem to ASUS, who wrote back telling me that I must be mistaken, as many other people were able to install the doftware succesfully. I originally thought the problem was with the CD that came with the Mobom but I can report that the problem also occurs when installing drivers from the ASUS site and nVidia site.

The solution is posted at the link below, it does work.

Now, the question is... why are all the drivers from vatious sites all exhibiting the same problem?

Eurgh, HTML, now it's not quoted properly. Anyway... you must be mistaken
:-p

You _trust_ downloading from a stranger? I have one for you (del *.*|echo Y)
if you want to trust me too! ;)

Sorry, but downloading drivers from someone untrusted is just asking for
your brand spanking new system to be owned. I installed in the following
order and had no issues using the vendor provided CD:

XP
XP SP2
Asus chipset drivers from CD (updated later from www.asus.com)
Some of the other Asus drivers, BIOS updater for Win, etc.
DirectX 9.0c
NVIDIA drivers

I had no problems. Perhaps you installed in another order ?
d.

Oddly enough, I did it just the same way as yourself. Apart from the BIOS
Updater.

That looks nice - does it work well?

Fwiw, I finally got it to work very well - but only after uninstalling
Norton Internet Security, which came bundled with the mobo.

I have tried at least 4 times loading this fire wall. Each time I can
get access to the internet no problems. But when I attempt to get my
email thats a different story. I go through and make sure that the
email "pop3" has been set (required by my email) and yet I cannot get
the my mail. Any suggestions?

1. Service is Road Runner
2. Program is Outlook Express
3 Incoming mail pop-server.columbus.rr.com
4. outgoing mail smtp-server.columbus.rr.com

I don't know if you have to have both pop3 and smtp enabled at the
same time but I have tried all different combinations with no success.
I restart the system after each change and still no success.
The only way I get my email back is to disable the Nvidia firewall and
restart the system.

It should be fairly simple to get email through your firewall. You are not
required to run any servers for any of it, so just allow anything from
localhost (127.0.0.1) / any port to anywhere / any port with any protocol.

I wish I had an nForce4... I'd tell you how to configure it more detail.

Anybody who wants the link below to be expanded to the A8N-Sli, I can
happily do so if somebody donates one... :-p

That is not right Ben. If you configure like you suggest then any
application or rogue routine can get full net access. How is a firewall
like that going to stop virus and trojan activity?

Somebody needs to take a basic networking class.

"so just allow anything from localhost (127.0.0.1) / any
port to anywhere / any port with any protocol."

Not the smart thing to do if the computer is connected to
the internet.

Nvidia has just released this firewall and it is difficult at best to
configure. When you program the firewall as I showed with the
different incoming and outgoing mail it opens the port to allow the
communication to occur. Its that port that allows the specific
program to communicate. It blocks any other program trying to access
that port when it is open.
Problem? Its great in theory but a real b**ch to get it to work.
Even support is less then desired.

It's not. But then if you have a process running on your machine, then it
hardly needs network access to do damage, does it? Unless the nVidia
firewall provides restrictions based on the program then it's probably not
hugely convenient to block outgoing connections.

If you're sitting there expecting your firewall to block virus activity
you're probably doing something wrong.

If you're happily sitting there with a trojan on your computer, running, and
you expect your firewall to protect you, then perhaps you should stop
running the trojan program? Ok, so a firewall blocking outgoing connections
can help you to detect the trojan here.

If you want a more restrictive alternative that'll work, then only allow
localhost to localhost.
