a8n-sli nForce LAN grarghhhhh

*sigh* So after over an hour of various fiddling around, I finally got the
LAN to work again.

I installed this new board and everything yesterday, installed the LAN/
Ethernet chipset driver(s) off the supplied ASUS cd, and my internet
connection was working fine.

Then this morning, it carked it. I left for work, came back tonight and it
worked for about 20 minutes and then suddenly died again. That was when I
spent an hour trying to get it work.

Tried to uninstall the drivers, disable, reinstall, everything - the PC kept
hanging when I tried to do these things. And in Safe mode it wouldn't let me
remove the drivers, giving me some rubbish about 'might be needed to boot'.
I don't know what happened in the end, but finally I was able to disable and
then uninstall the drivers. Then I reinstalled them through 'find new
hardware' (ie., not directly off the cd like last time). The drivers
installed fine this time, without freezing the PC. But still no connection.
But a new LAN connection was detected in Windows Network Connections - just
no traffic. Restarted the comp a few times, and now it's working again
(obviously).

Does anyone have any clue what's going on?!?!?!

I tried googling for solutions but couldn't seem to find much. Is there an
update/ patch I should be running out for? Would you suggest buying a decent
PCI-NIC instead of this onboard jobby?

I've also noticed my internet speed seems much slower than with my old MB/
setup.

And yes, all cables are plugged in and Router is operating fine. I'm not a
complete n00b. Just a little bit of one...

Are you installing the NVIDIA Network Access Manager/firewall stuff? If
so, try uninstalling it and letting it run without it. Some people have
had problems with it.

Actually, that was originally one of my concerns...I think it was working,
and then later on I installed those progs because...I dunno...and after then
problems! So if other people have had issues with those progs, they look to
be the cause. Problem is...I can't figure out how to uninstall it. Thanks...

Should be individually listed Control Panel --> Add and Remove Programs
list. If not, click the NVIDIA Drivers listed, and you will get an
options screen where you can select which NVIDIA driver you want to
uninstall. Naturally, you want to select the firewall stuff.

I've had nothing but trouble with the nForce firewall as well.

Nope, it's not there. I've tried this.
If not, click the NVIDIA Drivers listed, and you will get an options

Nope, it only lists the driver 'packages'...the most appropriate one being
the Ethernet drivers, without actually indicating anything about the
firewall stuff. And I didn't wanna risk uninstalling the actual Ethernet
drivers and being stuck back on square one.
I've gone into the actual program files directory and uninstalled it there.
I think it's all gone now. I hope it is!

What kind of power socket does your PSU have, 20 or 24 pin?
If it's 20 pin, try installing a 20 pin to 24 pin adapter
cable between your PSU and the motherboard. I had similar
problems with my LAN and they were solved that way. According
to many sources A8N-SLi should work also with a 20 pin cable,
but at least in my case the 24 pin adapter made a difference.

I could be wrong on this, but is there not some kind of built in
firewall on that Lan? I seem to recall reading somewhere that other
folks were having similar problems because of this firewall.
Something worth checking out in the bios. Ken
