A8N-E or P5WD2?

Time to buy a new motherboard... An A8N-E w/AMD X2 4400 or a P5WD2
w/Pentium D 830?

(I'm not a gamer)

I prefer fast. But stability and reliability are also important.

Thanks,

Bill

I would vote A8N-E: I have both a socket 939 mobo (Tyan), and a P5WD2:

Socket 939 runs cool; 100% stable, no issues whatsoever (with XP PRo).

P5WD2 is also super stable, but, runs hot. Very hot. CPU, a single
core 3.2Ghz (a 630, I think?) cranks out a lot of heat--even with no
chipset fan, that PC is louder, because it needs a bunch of cooling fans
running to prevent spontaneous combustion.

For less than the price of the P5WD2, you might consider the A8n-SLI
Premium, and get heatpipe cooling instead of the dreaded ASUS chipset
fan, which apparently makes a lot of noise, then fails.

The Tyan motherboard I have does not have a chipset fan, and I have had
no heat related problems.

If you like a quiet PC, the AMD chips run much cooler than the equivalent
Intel chips and therefore require lower fan speed to keep cool.

This month's MaximumPC has numerous articles comparing chips, chipsets, etc.

AMD CPU and Nvidia combo consistently comes out ahead.

Might help you make a decision.
