My friends PC (which I built) gets random BSOD's and restarts itself only
when there's USB devices plugged in. on 2 different copies of win2k on
different hard disks. In the device manager the IRQ of all the USB Host
controllers (KT400 chipset) are the same. I guess this is wrong as MY pc
(A7S333 - SiS7001) has them all as different. I've tried reinstalling all
the USB devices and setting the bios to non pnp but I still can't manually
specify the IRQ's. anyone got any ideas? Does it sound like a faulty
motherboard?

Does it sound like a faulty
motherboard?

Does it have Via 4in1 chipset drivers installed?
All usb devices share same interupt (21) on mine too. I think thats okay.
Is the PCI bus running much faster than 33Mhz? (set with the memory
speed in the bios)

Beyond driver updates, ye might try,
PIC interrupt mode instead of APIC (add Standard PC hal -beside ACPI
Uniprocessor in device mangler first)
Disable Parallel port if not used - never worked right for me.
Turn of USB legacy support.
Turn off unused game ports etc.
Underclock System speed, something like 320fsb /32 pci or 240fsb/30 pci.

All a bit drastic though :/

Hi,
Just for info I'm running XP Pro and when the machine starts it shows
different IRQ's for my hardware on the booting screen, but in the OS device
manager it shows four of the items running with the same IRQ. I don't have
any problems so I just ignore it. As far as the restarting and BSOD's when
USB devices are plugged in you might check how the USB power connectors are
set on the motherboard. IF their set to 5vsb they may be overloading the
power supply depending on how many USB devices are being used. You must
allow 500MA for each USB device. Check to see how much amperage the
particular power supply allows to be drawn from the 5vsb line if its being
used. I only mention this because some motherboard manuals say one thing in
writing and the opposite in the graphic display. I just built a computer
using an Asus A7V8X-MX and under the directions for setting the USB power it
states they are set to 5v by default because of the problems that could
result if they were set to the 5vsb and overloaded the power supply. Yet the
picture it shows for the connections shows the 5vsb setting as default.
This could really confuse people. This may not have anything to do with the
problem, but thought I would mention it just in case.
