I have a customer's computer that I have upgraded from a P333 to the ASUS
A7V8X-MX with a 2000+ XP Processor.

I was able to install the motherboard and get everything working, but the
AD1980 6 Channel Audio Codec. It flatly refuses to install stating that it
does not support WIN98. The software does support W98SE. I have tried
installing the driver separate from the install program and the driver will
not install.

The obvious thing would be to format the HD and install at least 98SE. Right
now that's not an option. My customers are an elderly couple and money is
very tight for them. It's a shame, because this is really an inexpensive
upgrade and everything else installed perfectly.

Any ideas?

There was probably enough of a difference between Win98 and Win98se
for ADI to not bother with writing the additional drivers.

Slap a SoundBlaster in it ? I understand that CMI8738 based cards range
in price from $7 to $70 retail, so that is about as cheap as it gets.
Did the machine come into the shop with a sound card in it ?

The audio driver they provide is probably a WDM driver. Support for that was
introduced in Windows 98 Second Edition. If there is no VXD driver
available, it's just not going to work in the original Win98.

I just bought the same board and here's what I did just minutes ago:

First I got the driver from Asus at:

http://www.asus.com/support/downloa...d=21&m_id=1&f_name=alc65_win9x323.zip~zaqwedc

Then I unzipped it, opened the control panel, and selected "install
new hardware". I followed the instructions which allows you to select
the driver and pointed it to the folder where the unzipped contents
are.

The sound worked without re-booting (once I figured out the pink
socket was the output).

BTW- I used Easy-Zip to unzip the file (freeware).

Hope this helps.
