Can someone tell me why my new Asus A7V8X-MX motherboard will not
recognize my old Maxtor 91728D8 harddrive. Recognize???? Shoot, it
won't even boot up with it attached!! Granted, it's not enhanced IDE,
but I do have it plugged into the secondary IDE channel. It won't even
let me get into the bios when it's attached.

Does this motherboard HAVE to use enhanced IDE harddrives? If so it's
a shame, because I have some backed up files on the Maxtor. What, do I
have to buy an old used computer just to pull off these files?

IIRC, you should at least be able to get the data off. I think it's
mostly a question of getting the right jumper settings. Check this
link. (watch out for word-wrap)

Go to the Tech Spec section of this page and select Jumper Settings to
match your current config. If the Cylinder Limitation Jumper was
initially used it must still be used to access the drive. HTH.

If you can't get to the BIOS with this drive attached to any IDE channel
then there may be a power supply or cable mismatch problem. Presumably
this drive was working on an IDE channel with an older mother board? How
long ago was that?

What settings do you have for hard drives in your BIOS?

If you really meant this old drive is hooked up as a slave rather than
secondary, be sure to set the drive jumpers to slave position.

On this particular system, I'm using WinXP Pro on a decent C drive (I
forget which one). I have the other non-IDE drive on a secondary
channel so that i can retrieve data from it for us on the C drive.

But, when this old drive is attached (using either IDE or non-IDE
cable, it doesn't make any difference) the start up check list gets as
far as "Checking IDE drives" and stops. Rebooting and pressing Del to
try to get into the bios does not work. Again, it just stalls.

I'll keep probing the web for an answer to this dilemma. Maybe jumper
settings need to be explored.
