I've got an a7v8x motherboard and the driver for the AC97 audio controler
sucks. Its version 5.10.0.3940 from Avance logic inc. From device manager
I can click on "update driver" and it will update it to a nicer driver but
it removes the Sound Effects Manager from the control panel. Without the
manager I can't get 5.1 sound.

Anybody know where to update this driver and still retain the sound effects
manager capabilities?

Thanks,
davidk

If the mobo uses the RealTek ALC650 chip you can get the wdm driver
here....

I used a few versions of these drivers on my A7N8X and they worked
great, 2/4/6 CH, EQ, sound effects, etc, it's all there.

I would uninstall what not working first and install these.

Thanks,
I installed the driver and it looks like they upgraded the effects manager.
The driver still leaves something to be desired though. There is a
background hiss and whenever I drag a window you get this nasty buzzing.
Whatever driver was installed automaticaly by XP was nice and quiet, but
like I said it lost the 5.1 capability. Oh well, maybe I'll get an m-audio
card, I've heard good things about them.
Thanks again.
