this is my first attempt at building a system with an SATA drive, and
so far it's not going real smooth. no drive is detected at all.
it is a single drive. i am using the SATA cable supplied with the
motherboard as the drive was bare.
i have it connected to the SATA1 port on the MB. and am using the
legacy power since the ASUS SATA cable did not come with a SATA power
cable as the WD retail drive does.

I have seen other posts on this newsgroup to the effect that this
combo may not work together. i'm hoping that was not true.

is there more i need to do here? i have seen posts on other forums
about needing to load drivers when windows is installing, but where do
i find those drivers? are they on the MB CD that came with it? what
are they called?

i only find RAID drivers on the CD and this is a single drive.

should the drive normally be detected automatically?

any help is appreciated.

thanks,

dave

When you say that it doesn't detect the drive do you mean that setup
doesn't detect it to format when you install windows or that you've
installed windows but it doesn't detect when you start the computer?

I have the same MB but use a maxtor SATA drive, when I first set it up
it detected and formatted fine when I booted from the windows cd, but
I had to change the boot settings in the bios before it would boot
from the SATA drive.

it is not seen by the system at all.
it has power, it spins, but the system does not see it.
nothing shows in the BIOS auto detect.

what would the boot settings get changed to?

i decided later that night to go get an IDE drive, so the system is
now up and running, but the A: drive is not detecting at all either.

i know the floppy works since i tried both it and the cable in another
computer. as with the HDD, the floppy lights up, but nothing spins.
when i put in a disk, i can't hear it clicking to read or anything.

at this point, is there anything i can do to get that HDD detected
from within windowsXP?
