I'm really at a loss here.

I used to have my USB 2.0 ports working just dandy. Now whenever I
plug a unit into any of my USB 2.0 ports, either the external header
that is separated from the mainbord, or the second pair of USB-ports
near the parallel ports, I get an error.

BIOS 1016

Unknown device. No matter what, USB 1 or 2, I cannot get Windows to
use these devices. I've tried to uninstall all drivers, remove
Via-4-in-1 drivers. Reinstall in a number of ways, but to no avail. I
used the device drivers 2.25 of Asus for USB2 (mainboard version, not
PCI-version).

I've tried to find microsoft drivers using Windows update, search for
Other drivers, but no seem to appear with USB.

This is so frustrating. What must I do to re-enable my USB portS?

A typical solution is to go into the Device Manager, and delete
the USB devices. Then, on the next reboot, let Windows rediscover
them and install drivers. Do a search in groups.google.com, for
a safe way to do this, as I'm not up on the details.

For USB2 support, you need SP1 for WinXP or SP3 for Win2000. Other
OS can sometimes get USB2 capability by using an "Orangeware" driver,
when Microsoft doesn't provide a USB2 driver. If the OS has USB2
support, then deleting the entries in the Device Manager and
rediscovering them on the next reboot should work.

If this method doesn't work, you could always revert your BIOS
to an earlier version. On mature motherboards, sometimes all the
new BIOS gives you is support for the latest processors, so if
you have an earlier processor, the update is unnecessary.

Did all that to no avail.

Got it. Problem is, USB 2.0 root hub etc. is detected and all, no
problem. It's when I plug usb units onto the USB 2.0 ports that I get
the unrecognized device errors.

Last night I reinstalled Windows XP out of despair. To my dread, USB
2.0 ports didn't work after that as well!

My theory is that it is either something with the VIA-4-in-1 drivers
(Reverting to 4.37), the bios (Reverting to 1015) or my mobo is
****ed.

My asus a7v333's(2 mobos, one raid deluxe) all work fine!
My usb 2 ports are below the sound on the back and hooked
to the case front off mobo!
First remove any drivers listed in add/remove programs! Everything
I have installed(clean) with XP/sp1 has supported usb2 chipsets.
Next go to device manager and remove/uninstall the usb devices.
Reboot, go immediately into bios and disable all usb devices.
It might take a few reboots for Xp to fix itself! You've hosed it by
using the mobo drivers! All references I have run into for usb2
drivers say use only the ones in SP1/1a!
I have 5 usb root hubs, 4 via rev 5 or later usb univ and 1 via enhanced!
Good luck!

Too bad, none of your advice helped. I still get the same "USB device
not recognized" when I plug something into any of my USB 2.0 ports.

Have you got sp1 or 1a installed?

Since you have the usb "drivers" installed, hopefully right, which via
hyperlon(sp) are you using, I usually don't worry about those with
XP/SP1. Nothing else that might hose the usb? Via inf?
Looking at my manual, it says PCI slot's 1&5 share with my usb1&2 and
my promise raid controller, Interrupt D!
I have had some problems with usb and these mobo's!

The drivers are installed correctly as far as I can tell. That is the
very frustrating part of it. Currently the SP1 drivers are installed,
but it doesn't matter if I use MS or Via drivers. None work at all.
Via inf= 4.37, release drivers for the mobo. Ive also tried 4.49, no
good. And 4.43. Not good either >_<

Raid is disabled.

No kiddin! :) I've fired off a mail to Asus but I don't expect to get
any useful answer from them.

What's in slot 1 & 5, pci?
Plug and play in bios setting?
reset config if you make any changes!

Both are empty. Slot 2 has my NIC, Slot 3 my Audigy.

I've reset ESCD - no cigar. PnP enabled.
