What happens if you buy a 333MHz CPU and it doesn't work, can you throttle
it back to 266.

I called AMD and asked the same thing because of the difficult to find
2600+ 266MHz FSB (OEM ONLY) CPU. Which happens to be the fastest CPU
I can put in my (NON-OEM) A7V333 rev. 1.04 MB. I was thinking on
using the 333MHz version and throttling it back. AMD Tech Support
gave the following example:
---Example below is same CPU with locked Multiplier---
Model | FSB x2 | Multiplier | Clock Freq.
----------------|------------------|------------------|---------------------
2600+ | 166 333 | 12.5 | 2080
---------------|-------------------|------------------|---------------------
2600+ | 133 266 | 12.5 | 1670
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see in throttling it back you'll decrease the FSB but in
so doing you'll also reduce it's core clock.
In the case above you'd do better off with a 2400+
P Rating | FSB | x2 | Multiplier | Clock Freq.
----------------|----------|--------|------------------|---------------------
2400+ | 133 | 266 | 15 | 2000
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which is what I've done. I'd rather use a (NEW RETAIL) 2400+ @
2000MHz 266MHz FSB (3 year Warranty) in my A7V333 rev.1.04 than to
either throttle back a (NEW) 2600+ 333MHz FSB to 1670MHz/266MHz, or to
wait until I find the rare 2600+ 266MHz FSB (OEM Only), (30 day
warrantee at best) (no guarantee that it's not a pull) CPU.
Of course if I ever come across a really cheap 2600+ 266FSB CPU say
for $10.00 then I'll gladly swap it out. ;-)
