My pc's started to behave very erratically on bootup.

It will post with a single beep all the time, however on occasion it
beeps starts to load windows xp and then reboots, beeps and starts to
load xp, reboots......etc etc etc

If I go into the bios and set the fsb from 133 to 100 it boots fine.

If I then reboot, and set it to 133 it boots fine.

I have been getting spontaneous reboots for no reason also. Previously
i blamed this on my old thermo-engine heatsink fan, as it only
happened very rarely when playing games. Recently changed that to a
coolermaster behemoth. My cpu temp now never shifts off 47c however it
now exhibits this strange problem.

my specs are

A7v266-E (with original bios)
XP 1800+ (first early Palimino type)
2x 256mb PC2100 Crucial memory
Creative Geforce 2 pro 64mb
SB live
PCI Modem
Lan card
Pioneer slot loading dvd105
Pioneer dvdr105
Seagate Baracuda 4 harddisk
No floppy drive
MS optical intellimouse usb
MS internet keyboard
Iiyama S900MT1 19" monitor

I built my pc myself a few years back on the release of the KT266A
chipset and the xp1800+ cpu. Since that time it's been exceptionally
reliable with only the infinite loop bug thanks to counterstrike
showing its ugly head on occasions. Other than that its been a peach.

The only recent thing i've added is the dvdr105 which i replaced my
aging Sony CRX cdrw with.

Any idea's why it's go on the fritz all of a sudden?

Just taking a wild guess here, but I'd say your PSU is under rated for
your system or the PSU is dieing.

It came with my chieftech dragon case. Its a 420w AMD/Intel P4
approved one.

Since I just posted its done it again, and I'm now typing at 1.13ghz
with a fsb of 100.

Looking at Sandra it gives me the following readouts...

Board temp 25c
CPU temp 48c

CPU Voltage 1.82v (even though in the bios its set to 1.80 (I thought
it was supposed to be 1.75v??))
Aux Voltage 0.10v
+3.3v Voltage 3.30V
+5v Voltage 4.6v
+12v Voltage 12.46v
-12v Voltage -13.63v
-5v Voltage -6.12v

Does this look like a dying psu to you?

Just checked again. They are identical.

Right, Palominos use 1.75v.

I've read the 5v line shouldn't be off by more then about 5% or it can
cause problems, I remember posts awhile back about certain epox boards
and low 5v lines were causing a lot of problems for their owners. I
would use a volt meter and test it at the IDE cable or at the
MOSFET/regulators on the board and see what you get, I wouldn't
necessarily trust the software readings, they are generally only
ball-park figures.

The only other thing I can think of you can try is to open the case side
panel and put a small window fan blowing into the case over the
hardware, if the problems go away then something is probably over
heating and causing the system to crash, IME overheated video cards
and/or CPU usually will do it.

Some PSU have POTS in them so you can adjust the voltages, but if your
not familiar with PSUs and/or electronics it's best you keep your hands
out of the PSU! ;p

Good Luck,
Ed
